Drake Maye is one of the top prospects in the 2024 NFL draft, as the former North Carolina quarterback is expected to be in contention to be taken among the top three picks. With that in mind, Maye has enlisted the help of a former No. 1 pick to help prepare for the draft process.
Maye told The New York Post’s Mark Cannizzaro that former New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning as he prepares for the spring.
“I’ve been working with Eli throughout the process, getting on Zooms and talking football with him,” Maye said. “I’m working out in Mobile, Alabama, and his backup quarterback in college was Dave Morris, and he’s training me for the draft. Pretty small world. And, I was at the Manning Camp this summer, so I got to see Eli and Peyton.”
Maye was a two-year starter at North Carolina, totaling 7,929 passing yards and 62 touchdown passes since the start of the 2022 season. He is one of a select few players who are expected to be in contention for a top-two pick come May, as USC’s Caleb Williams is the favorite to be tabbed No. 1 overall.
The NFL scouting combine will take place at the end of February in Indianapolis, where Maye will work out for and meet with interested teams. He also will be the focal point of UNC’s pro day, which will occur later in the draft process.
Manning went through this whole process 20 years ago, when the then-San Diego Chargers picked him No. 1 overall before trading him to New York. Although a lot has changed with the draft since then, it is still good for Maye to get that first-hand advice from a seasoned veteran.
